Boeing to cut 800 jobs, cites tanker delay
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
WICHITA, Kan. — Airplane maker Boeing Co. said it plans to cut about 800 jobs at a plant in Wichita, Kan., next year.
The Chicago-based company says the reductions are a result of some programs ending and the government's delay until at least next year in choosing a contractor to replace the U.S. Air Force's aging fleet of aerial refueling tankers.
Boeing is competing for the KC-X tanker contract against a partnership of Northrop Grumman Corp. and the parent company of the French aircraft maker Airbus. After the contractor is selected, the program would be supported from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
The Boeing layoffs will affect managers, as well as salaried and hourly workers. Boeing said Wednesday, Nov. 19, that it will deliver 60-day layoff notices to 76 employees on Friday. The rest of the layoffs will continue throughout next year.
Boeing's Wichita plant currently employs about 3,000 people.
