Check 'n Go closing Ohio locations
Tuesday, November 11, 2008
In response to the passage of Issue 5 and the implementation of Ohio's new short-term loan statute, Check 'n Go, a leading provider of consumer financial services today announced it intends to close 36 of its 71 retail stores in communities across the state, the company said today.
The closure of more than 50 percent of the company's Ohio retail operations over the next few months will result in the elimination of as many as 75 additional industry positions.
"While we are disappointed with the results of the election and concerned for our customers, we take some comfort in knowing that close to two million Ohioans voted to defeat the issue that strips them of a valuable financial tool," stated Doug Clark, chief operating officer for Check 'n Go. "Unfortunately, as we communicated throughout the campaign, operating under the restrictions set forth in House Bill 545 is not an option. The elimination of this important financial option is resulting in the forecasted loss of jobs and credit options at a time when Ohio families can ill–afford either."
While their long-term viability is yet to be determined, remaining Check 'n Go locations in Ohio will immediately begin offering customers alternate financial services permitted under the Ohio Small Loan statute, in addition to check cashing services, the NetSpend Axcess Prepaid MasterCard and other new products.
