Police arrest 68-year-old woman in bank robbery
Friday, November 21, 2008
FRANKLIN — A 68-year-old Middletown woman charged in the Friday, Nov. 21, holdup of a Franklin bank may be responsible for other heists in Warren County.
Barbara Joly, of 5008 Victoria Ave., was arrested by Franklin police shortly after the 1:30 p.m. robbery at the Huntington Bank, 340 S. Main St., said Lt. Gerald Massey.
The bank is located about a block from the police station.
Massey said Joly entered the bank at about 1:33 p.m. and gave a teller a note demanding cash but did not display any weapon.
Another bank employee, who saw Joly leave the bank, called police and was able to point out Joly's car, Massey said.
The officer followed Joly's car down an alley, but was not able to stop her until they reached Fifth Street, just east of South River Street. Joly did not offer any resistance as she was taken into custody, police said.
Massey said no weapon was found on her person or vehicle and evidence from the robbery was located in her vehicle.
Joly was charged with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, and will be under a $100,000 bond or 10 percent, he said. She is expected to be arraigned via video at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, in Franklin Municipal Court. However, if Joly is released on bond, she will be arraigned in person at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
She was to be transferred to the Warren County Jail in Lebanon later Friday evening.
Massey said Joly did not have any criminal record and there was no record of any criminal or traffic cases against her in Middletown Municipal Court.
Joly's husband, William, said he "was not at liberty to comment" Friday evening.
Warren County Sheriff Tom Ariss said the "M-O" from the Franklin robbery is similar to those that happened in Lebanon and Mason. Ariss said he expects detectives from those jurisdictions will be interested in talking with Joly after she arrives at the jail.
"We don't know that (Joly was involved in other robberies) but it's certainly uncommon, but not impossible for elderly females to be bank robbers," Massey said. "Any bank robbery where an elderly female is involved, it would be reasonable to take a look at her."
Police in Lebanon and Mason have unsolved bank robberies in which the suspect was an older woman wearing a scarf and sunglasses. On Sept. 24, US Bank, 620 Columbus Ave., in Lebanon, was robbed by a woman described as between 60 and 70 years old. On May 29, the People's First Savings Bank, 225 Reading Road in Mason, was robbed by a woman described as being around 50. No weapons were displayed in those robberies, police said.
